Sue Fish is interested in the recent huge changes in society in this decade. In 2010, for the first time in many years, students became politically active and took to the streets to protest about the rise in tuition fees. In summer 2011, young people rampaged through shops stealing the designer goods advertisers had persuaded them they must possess. The Occupy protest saw tents erected in financial districts in London and New York City.
In 2012 huge resources were deployed on security for the London Olympics. The big private security companies and food franchises made immense profits. Many ordinary people found tickets for Olympic events unobtainable and suspected that vast numbers of tickets were for sponsors’ corporate entertainment.
Have we created a ‘Lost Generation’ in the UK where kids have worked hard through school and university only to find themselves jobless, – graduates stacking shelves, working as unpaid interns or dying in Afghanistan?
“Mind the Gap” attempts to represent the years 2010, 2011 and 2012.
